Lesson 1 - Change your thinking, the new wealth is information and knowledge products and services

How to create a successful online business system
Lesson 1

How do we start?

What is the first step to building an online business that will create success, satisfaction and the income that you are seeking?

Actually, it's not a system, nor web tools, nor anything like that, at this stage.

The first step is to understand that an 'online business' is completely different, in many ways, to a traditional 'offline business'.

An online business uses the power and the tools of the World Wide Web (Web), and especially, it is most successful when it can satisfy the searching and the information needs, problems, opportunities and challenges, of individuals.

Let's look at this more closely, because, actually, to fully understand this requires us to think very differently about business.

You may even say, it requires a 'paradigm shift', that is to say, a need to even change our established patterns of thinking.

Let's examine what we mean by this.

It is a fact that, today and everyday, billions of searches are made on the internet for information, right across the world. People use their favourite search engines to do this.

For example, if I have a need for 'cheap flights' or the 'best car insurance deal' or 'who was Descartes?' or 'how can I learn to play the guitar?'or 'what is quantum theory?', a simple web search will return many possible information sources to solve that problem, or answer that question, or help to satisfy that need.

The web is the most powerful system in the world today, for anybody in the world, whoever you are, to ask 'Who, What, Why, Where, When, How'for anything and everything.

The web is becoming our global knowledge system to be able to learn, share, and trade our information and knowledge products and services to one another.

Furthermore, every day, millions of new pages of information content are being added to the internet and world wide web.

Although we are all suffering a global financial and economic crisis, with slowing and sluggish traditional industrial economies, information and knowledge on the world wide web is growing exponentially, year on year, at spectacular rates.

The Knowledge Economy is the fastest growing economy in the world today, and is likely to remain so for the future.

So the web today, is undoubtedly the most important source of information, by far, and will continue to be the number 1 provider, and the number one choice to find information. Nothing else can possibly compare.

The mentality for the web is 'I need to search for something and then I need to choose, from the returned sources of information, by the search engine that matched my search query, the best sites to explore further.

This is 'web shopping' for the individual connected to the internet from anywhere in the world.

To do this, you may have a desktop computer, or a mobile wireless laptop computer, a netbook, or, maybe, a phone connected to the internet, or some other intelligent device (Apple iPad, for example today), or all of these devices.

Web shopping is a personal request for information, most of the time. It is happening all around the world, twenty four hours a day, seven days a week, non-stop.

Web shopping for information provides the greatest ever opportunity for a new kind of business. All that this online business requires, to be successful, is that it you are to be supply that INFORMATION to satisfy needs.

You do not need to think about the offline world of shopping at all. In fact, this is one of the biggest mistakes online businesses make.

You do not need to set up a physical shop.

Your website and/or blog is your online shop.

You do not need to consider the most popular locations where people go to shop, as you do in the offline world.

In the offline world of shopping, it is very important to select the right location where there will be more guaranteed 'passing traffic' to then sell your products and services.

Desirable physical shopping locations are, of course, the most expensive, to guarantee the high volumes of shopping traffic.

Most shopping retailers will tell you that a key part of the success of their business is LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION.

Or maybe you are a professional, say an IT services consultant, and you may need an office location in a convenient, easy to access, city or town centre location. That is also necessary, and can also be a very expensive overhead cost to your business.

Here, now, is the paradigm shift. Because there are billions of people around the world connecting to the internet daily, there is a massive swarm of ever increasing traffic that has the potential to find you, if you can provide the right INFORMATION, wherever you are in the world.

You may be living in a city, or a town, or remote village, or even on a beach, or even travelling in a train or car. You may be working in a church or community hall, or from your home. You may even be working from your bedroom, or a holiday home, if you wish.

As long as you have a personal computing device connected to the internet, anywhere in the world you choose, you can create a website that gives the POTENTIAL that web traffic will find you based on the INFORMATIONAL content you provide for the search engines to find you.

In other words, LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION can even now be irrelevant.

Instead, today, for a successful online business, the key consideration is to provide relevant quality INFORMATION.

The mantra for a successful online business today is INFORMATION, INFORMATION, INFORMATION.

People around the world today, have been given the potential to be 'massively empowered personally', like never before in history, to build successful online businesses.

This is a change of mindset that must be fully understood before we proceed to building the successful online business.

And, then, there are web tools and techniques to help you find and build a successful, profitable, business niche. We will look at these, in detail, in later lessons.

Does this make sense to you?

Do you see the paradigm/mindset shift needed?

Do you have any questions about this, or do you need any further clarification before we proceed?

Do you have any experiences or other feedback to share? We will gladly publish your feedback for all to see.

Lesson 2 will be available very shortly. We are writing one lesson a week. Please watch this space and feedback wherever you can.
